Keys to Setting Up Your Online Learning Space for Success

Specifying certain areas in your home or apartment learning spaces is an important element for successful participation in online classes. Snacks, lunch, and other breaks should be away from the learning space. Read more for ideas setting up areas to encourage online learning.

  •     Ergonomics

Creating an ergonomically aware learning space will provide students a location that benefits their body and their minds. Working on computers for hours that are not ergonomically situated can lead to physical discomfort and pain. A learner’s body can be injured in a poorly designed area.

The rule of thumb when setting up an area is to follow the 90-degree rule. When a learner is seated at their computer, three areas of their body should be at 90-degree angles. Ankles, hips, and knees should all be forming 90-degree angles. You can utilize a foot stool, a pillow for lumbar support, and/or a chair that adjusts.

Additionally, when a learner is facing their screen, it should be at eye level. You can place the screen on a book or something else solid to raise the laptop to eye level. Consider purchasing a wireless mouse. It can be moved to comfortable locations and minimize the constant use of a touchscreen.

  •     Lighting

Another element for a successful online learning space is lighting. During daylight hours, natural lighting is preferred. You will need to locate your computer screen so that it is not impacted by glare. For later hour classes or homework, select lighting with a yellow hue. This creates less glare and is better for your eyes. Lights with a dimmer control would be ideal. Then you can adjust the brightness depending on the time of day and season.

  •     Technology
